Information on Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide or “Happy Gas” is now offered at The Aesthetic Smile Collective.  We know how common it is for patients to suffer from dental anxiety which can negatively affect their dental health and well-being.  We introduced this as it can greatly help with mild-moderate dental anxiety and help make appointments more comfortable with less stress.

Nitrous Oxide sedation consists of a mix of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen.  A small, scented silicone nose mask is worn and the mixture breathed in.  The mixture is adjusted to each patient so that the ideal amount is given.  Within 5 minutes, patients feel the effect which can be any or a combination of the following:

  • Feeling of warmth
  • Light headedness
  • Tingling of extremities
  • Lightness/heaviness of extremities
  • Euphoria
  • Feeling of vibration
  • Relaxation of the muscles

Once you have relaxed then the treatment can begin and the mask remains on throughout the treatment.  At the end of the appointment, pure oxygen is given for 5mins which reverses the effect of the Nitrous Oxide.   After 15 mins you will be able to drive again with no lasting effects, providing you feel fully recovered.

It is the most widely used form of sedation in dentistry and is very safe.  It can be used safely on adults and children.

Advantages of dental inhalation sedation:

  • Safe
  • Works quickly
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Quick recovery
  • Very few side effects
  • It has a mild analgesic effect
  • Reduces a strong gag reflex
  • Can be used for short or long appointments

Most health funds cover some of the cost of the nitrous oxide sedation which is billed in 30 min intervals.
